The Right Thali Concept

What could possibly be wrong in our diet?

We have a lot of components in our food that are artificially processed, refined and reengineered which are not compatible to the human body system.

Human body has been constantly evolving over time. At the same time our eating habits have been evolving, but only at a faster pace. The human body is genetically mismatched to the modern diet that emerged with farming practices — an idea known as the discordance hypothesis. This mismatch is believed to be a contributing factor to the prevalence of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other lifestyle disorders today

The traditional thali

The Indian thali is very unique. It is a perfect blend of taste, texture, combination of flavours and the outstanding colours on the plate that makes it a wholesome meal.

From a nutritional point of view, Indian thali is as classical example of a well-balanced meal providing carbs, protein, vitamins, minerals, and fiber. The combination of a grain, lentil, some vegetables, sour chutney, raita, or pickle, some tadka (tempering), plus using ghee and spices, make the Indian thali wholesome.

While the grain and lentil combination is considered to provide complete carbs and proteins necessary for survival, good health, and immunity, the presence of all six tastes (sweet, salt, sour, pungent, bitter and astringent) in Indian meals makes it the most nourishing.
How to make The Right Thali
While keeping the non-negotiable elements intact, let's see what a Right Thali really looks like. The Right Thali is not designed by placing Carbs (rice and roti) at the centre. The Right Thali must be designed focusing on the protein-rich dishes. For example, take the protein (paneer or chicken dish), then think what goes with it. Think what you can add to make it interesting. Don't prepare rotis /rice and then decide which sabji goes well with it.

Think, what should be the right amount of carbs in your plate.  This meal has to appeal to all your five senses. Change your eating patterns. Train your mind to look for all things healthy and you will find wholesome and lip-smacking recipes.

The Rich Thali must have just enough food to match your activity levels. Eat enough to nourish your body for that day, based on how much energy you spent during the day.

Include a good amount of healthy saturated fats such as ghee and butter for better absorption of vitamin D in the body. It also helps in the formation of your sex hormones, for better functioning of the brain cells and a lot more.

But is our daily home thali well balanced?

You will agree that the thali that we have daily at our homes do miss quite a few of the essential ingredients, mostly due to factors like busy schedule, affordability, availability etc. If you are a working professional, in most cases your meals would be the most unbalanced.
At the same time there is another important factor that is often overlooked. As a result of declining soil fertility and selective breeding, the nutritional contents of some fruits, vegetables, and grains have also been compromised. This leads to nutritional deficiencies, even if we choose to eat healthy.
